Upper Tibetan Children’s Village School Renovations
Studio Nyandak is working on the renovation and repair of more than a dozen buildings at the Upper Tibetan Children's Village (TCV) school in Dharamsala. This pro-bono work includes the repair of residential quarters for staff members and faculty and renovations of the middle school roof, art room, and meditation center. Most recently, the team is engaged in the design and construction of the adjacent new science building and the senior art room. The art room design configures the building for year-round daylighting. This includes opening up the existing dropped ceiling and brick exterior walls for a larger and more air-filled creative space. Our renovation designs prioritize environmental stewardship by reusing building systems and materials wherever possible.
Tibetan Children’s Village (TCV) is a non-profit educational community dedicated to the care of Tibetan children living in exile. Following his flight to India in 1959, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama recognized a critical need for the many children who had been orphaned or separated from their families during their escape from Tibet. Over the next several years, the Tibetan community worked with private donors and the Government of India to establish an educational and residential network for these children. Today, there are TCV locations across India providing a holistic education to over 16,700 Tibetan children. More than half of the Studio Nyandak team are proud alumni of TCV schools.
